GROWING PAINS: 5 signs you may be going through a Spiritual Awakening
“Often it’s the deepest pain which empowers you to grow into your highest self.” – Anoynomous
The last few months were ROUGH; I was at a job I hated, had a personal life that I thought was in shambles, and overall, felt the need for CHANGE. Naturally, on the outside, I didn’t let it show that I was facing a lot of inner turmoil but, on the inside, I was dealing with a lot of anxiety…
Have you ever experienced something extremely detrimental that, eventually, changed your life for the better? Experience any pain that helped you find your purpose? Or, just completely tired of your mundane life and have a yearning for something much, much more? What you most likely experienced was a spiritual awakening. Spiritual awakenings are a “wake up” call to life. They are the beginning of embarking on a spiritual path; the awakening is to help you connect with God and your highest self, so that you can live your BEST LIFE with purpose.
My first spiritual awakening (that I was aware of) was in 2011. An experience so damaging that almost caused me to lose faith, helped me to grow closer to God and have the desire to live my life differently. The awakening can be excruciating at first; experiencing pain that is trapped by negative emotions, energies, cyclical patterns and karmic debts. It often functions as anxiety/depression, when you are resistant or hesitant to moving forward. But, the pain is only temporary; its there to help you grow to breakthrough to a new-found self-awareness, higher conscious, and deep desire to want to change for the better.
- A desire to change your job/career
When this happens, it means you’re on the path to fulfilling your life purpose. Step out on faith and do it anyways! If your career hasn’t changed, most likely you have a deep, deep desire to want to do something different. Usually, the transition is NOT easy, but it is worth it!
- Bouts of depression/anxiety
Common mental health issues such as depression and/or anxiety can happen before, and sometimes after spiritual awakening. I’ve experienced both; the spiritual awakening can be a contradiction between your inner being (soul & consciousness) desiring change and your outer being (material world & human behavior) being fearful of change. When those two things conflict, it leads to stagnation or fear of the unknown. Those fears can feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders and often make you feel like no one else in the world understands what you’re going through; which can lead to mental turmoil such as depression and anxiety.
- Lack of sleep/ Synchronicity
Trouble falling asleep is a common trait in people who experience spiritual awakenings. Racing thoughts, waking up in the middle of the night at a certain time (especially between the hours of 2-4 am) are often related to what is going on deep down inside you. Something is keeping you awake and that’s the desire to change. If you wake up in the middle of the night at the same time you’re experiencing synchronicity; which is a sign telling you, you are on the right path in life.
The desire to want to be isolated from the world is a huge sign that you are going through a spiritual awakening. There are many reasons why someone would naturally want solitude; whether its time and space to heal, wanting to face your fears alone or avoiding your internal issues. Turning inward into solitude, you’ll discover discomfort with issues that you may initially want to avoid, but when resolved will help you find peace and a deeper appreciation to life.
- Drawn to personal development & inspiration
Desiring change or moving toward your life purpose, will cause you to reevaluate your daily habits. Surround yourself with inspiration from self-help books/podcasts, attending church, meditating, praying, yoga/exercise, personal development seminars or conferences, eating healthy, writing, being in nature, etc.
There are so many other signs to experience spiritual awakenings, but these are the ones that I experienced within the past couple months. Initially, I tried to avoid my issues until I was ridden with anxiety. I turned to vices to cope, until I had no choice but to stand up to my fears. I wrote in my journals (yes, I have more than one!) the things I needed to change and drew on inspiration to keep me focused. I practiced my daily spiritual routines and rituals to shift change with faith. On October 1st, I started a new career that is aligned with my purpose. I feel more at peace within and with my personal life, I’m in a much better space. Spiritual awakenings are needed for growth and (spiritual) maturity. To be prepared for your purpose and have change in your life, you must be taught by life lessons and do the (soul) work.
I pray that this information helps someone. I also pray that you find it within yourself to be open to life’s lessons and hardships; so that you may be open to doing the soul work that elevates your mind & spirit to a life filled with purpose, peace and happiness.
